Relative advantages of Phonebloks over traditional mobile phones

Relative Advantages of Phonebloks

In addition to the potential long-term environmental benefits, the phonebloks platform offers a wide range of relative advantages that are beneficial to both individual cell phone users and the mobile device industry as a whole

One of the immediate benefits that the individual mobile phone user would experience the vast amount of money that he or she has been saving by not having to purchase a new cell phone on a regular basis. This is because the core “blok” of the phone is designed to last and be reused with generation after generation of component bloks, which effectively contrasts the trend in the contemporary mobile phone industry of producing technologies to be temporary. The only replacements that the user would have to buy would be the updated versions of the feature bloks that strike the user as particularly appealing, and the user only has to spend money on the particular feature bloks that he or she wants, potentially eliminating hundreds of dollars in unnecessary expenditures.

Phonebloks also provides a unique opportunity for mobile phone manufacturers and wireless service providers by allowing them to create an entirely new and distinct branch of the mobile device market. Mobile phone manufacturers like LG or Samsung could potentially acquire the technological information necessary to reproduce the phonebloks concept and develop their own versions of core “bloks and feature bloks” , such as a verizon “core” or a LG camera blok.

Phonebloks: An Environmentally Conscious Response to E-waste

The ongoing environmental disaster of e-waste is a massive and rapidly growing problem that has the capability to threaten the ecological integrity of the planet Earth for many years to come.
There are an estimated 4.1 billion active cell phone subscriptions throughout the world, and from these users comes an astounding 140,000,000 discarded mobile devices that find their way into landfills on an annual basis, which isn’t entirely surprising when considering that the average cell phone user keeps the same phone for periods of a year or less. Components of these 140,000,000 discarded mobile devices contain toxic chemicals, such as an estimated 80,000 pounds of lead as well as untold amounts of mercury, chlorine, bromine, and cadmium. These chemicals, which easily escape the corroding frames of discarded phones and become absorbed through the soil into the local ecosystem, have been linked to a series of health related issues such as birth defects, impaired learning, and other serious health complications
Phonebloks has the potential to make a massive environmental impact by drastically reducing the amount of e-waste that accumulates annually in landfills from mobile devices. Such a reduction would be possible due to the fact that users would be able to update and modify the individual feature components of the phone, without having to purchase an entirely new device. The Phonebloks platform provides a foundation to initiate and facilitate social change by proposing an effective solution to the environmental disaster of e-waste that has the capability of being beneficial to mobile phone users, the mobile phone industry, and the environmental health of the planet as a whole.
